Hydrogeologic & Contamination Investigations

If you have a subsurface contamination issue, our goal is to thoroughly, and cost-effectively, investigate your site so that we understand the problem, can perform an effective risk assessment, and ultimately increase the value of your property by restoring it to productive use.

A thorough, accurate characterization of the hydrogeology and soil and groundwater contamination is critical for a realistic risk assessment and an effective remediation design. Knowing what we need to accomplish these things - an understanding of your objectives, knowledge of environmental regulations, an accurate conceptual model of the physical and chemical characteristics of the subsurface environment, and an understanding of how contaminants behave in that environment - is just as important.

Typical elements of hydrogeologic and contamination investigations include:

  • Designing and installing groundwater monitoring systems
  • Soil borings to characterize the layering of subsurface materials
  • Sampling and chemical analyses to map the extent of soil, rock, groundwater, or sediment contamination
  • Field testing to estimate aquifer properties
  • Calculating the rate and direction of groundwater and contaminant flow
  • Statistical analyses to track changes in water quality or evaluate plume stability
  • Modeling groundwater flow and contaminant transport to predict the movement and fate of contaminants in the subsurface
  • Identifying potential contaminant receptors

AVANT conducts dozens of hydrogeologic and contamination assessments each year for manufacturers and steel mills; real estate companies; electric utilities; law firms; investment, trucking, construction, and waste-management companies; agribusinesses; municipalities; and architectural and engineering firms. These investigations are related to chemical releases, underground storage tanks, unregulated disposal practices, material storage, solid- and hazardous-waste disposal sites, municipal facilities, and property acquisitions of all types. The types of contaminants we've investigated include petroleum hydrocarbons, manufactured-gas components, toxic metals, fertilizer constituents, chlorinated and aromatic solvents, PCBs, and pesticides and herbicides.
