Brownfield Site Evaluations

The term "brownfield site" has many definitions. The simplest meaning is "abandoned or underutilized properties whose expansion, redevelopment, or reuse is hindered by the presence or perceived presence of hazardous substances, pollutants, or contamination". In spite of their negative connotations, AVANT believes that communities should view brownfield sites as resources rather than liabilities. Practically all local governments have brownfield sites within their jurisdictions, representing a huge potential resource for community development, increased employment, and enhanced tax revenue.

Achieving positive, satisfying outcomes for brownfield sites requires many of the same skills and experience necessary for other types of environmental projects; however, other special expertise is needed - a detailed knowledge of the applicable state regulatory programs and the funding mechanisms crucial for allowing local governments to begin restoring brownfield sites to productive use. AVANT brings both sets of skills to the table. We work directly with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management's Brownfields Program staff and the Indiana Development Finance Authority on behalf of our government clients to apply for funding and develop the technical work scope necessary to characterize and clean up site contamination.

AVANT has participated in or successfully completed high-profile brownfield projects for the City of Fort Wayne, the City of Garrett, and the Town of Pierceton, Indiana.
